Memoirs and musings of Darius Bashar. Toronto portrait photographer and writer, in pursuit of all things real, raw and intimate.

Thank You

Thank you for taking us in when we were afraid for our lives.

Thank you for educating us.

Thank you for police officers and firefighters and nurses and doctors.

Thank you for clean streets with garbage and recycling bins at every other corner.

Thank you for providing more than 2 legitimate political parties.

Thank you for water fountains.

Thank you for city planners that think about children, whose parents haven't yet met.

Thank you for all those that fought and sacrificed their lives, in wars that we can only read about in books and watch in films.

I was not entitled to any of this. The truth is, I've done nothing to deserve any of it.

One day it could be taken away from me, but today it's here and I am eternally grateful.

Thank you Canada.

Jhardaine

Black and white has been calling to me lately. Not sure what it is or why I've been so fascinated by this aesthetic, but I feel as if there is something important for me to learn - about my work or maybe about myself.

Something interesting happens when you remove things from the frame. I am curious to see how far I can take this minimalistic approach. What will be left, once I remove colour, background texture, clothing, etc?

Old Montreal

This past summer I was really lucky and got to work with a few super talented people in Montreal. I was hired as the Creative Director for a fashion campaign, for a brand called Cardinal of Canada. They make great quality men's overcoats that also look sharp.

I was fortunate to have found a truly talented Montreal team with Brian Ypperciel who did a tremendous job as our photographer and editor and the lovely Florence O. Durand who killed it, as our stylist. We also hit the jackpot with our model Francis Cadieux, who surpassed all of our expectations.

Lastly, I want to send a big thank you to my homie, Mr. Andrew Peek for bringing me on to this project. It wasn't easy, but in the end, it was well worth it. :=

If you're in the market for a stylish winter coat that will last many years, I'd definitely check out Cardinal of Canada's new website. I can tell you first hand that they make great quality products.

Talent + Kindness are NOT Mutually Exclusive

It was such a treat to get to work with the lovely Laura Rowley again. She is easily one of the most talented models I have had the pleasure of working with. Gorgeous, insanely fast at posing, with a vast range of looks and attitude. There are models out there that look great, but really only have one look. Laura is NOT one of them, she can go from delicate, to fierce in a blink of an eye.

The other thing that I love about Laura is how sweet and kind she is. Too many models, actors, photographers, etc, think since they have achieved a certain level of success, it gives them the right to look down at others. Laura on the other hand is a class act through and through.

Sunchasers

Before the leaves all turn to dust and the colours fly away, we chase the sun together, in search of the endless summer.
