A Major Part of My Life That Was Missing From Instagram

Dear Jenn,

This morning I looked at the images in the gallery of my Instagram profile. I asked myself how close my page was to the real me

Were there any major elements missing from my life?

Any glaring gaps?

Oh yes.

There definitely was.

One of the most important people in my life was missing from my feed.

My beloved.

My sweetheart.

My Bestie.

I could not find YOU on my page.

Well.. that's not entirely true. “Jenn” is all over my page, but there isn't a single picture of you and I TOGETHER.

This made me very sad. Maybe a part of me was scared to share our love with my followers. Maybe I had some sort of preconception of who I needed to be on Social Media. Maybe I was afraid of annoying people.

But the truth is, Jenn, you are the most important person in my life. If I want to uphold my reputation of being honest and real with my community, it makes no sense not to celebrate and acknowledge our partnership. It's so pivotal to all aspects of my growth.

Jenn, I love you.

You bring so much joy, laughter, power and adventure into my life.

Thanks for being the cheekiest of monkeys.

xoxo

Darius

Could I Make It On YouTube?

I so often don’t ask for help. But I can't stop thinking about what my life would be like if I was a YouTuber.

Could I do this? Could I build a successful channel on YouTube and create a following?

Here’s a list of why this could work:

  • I have all the technical equipment.

  • I know how to film and edit. (Thank you, film school.)

  • I am really comfortable in front of a camera.

  • But most of all, I am willing to go DEEP and BE REAL.

I get so freaking excited by the possibility of succeeding on YouTube. Maybe too excited. So then I run off a different list intended to manage my excitement.

  • It takes years to make a single dollar.

  • 99.9% of YouTubers fail.

  • There are millions of channels already.

  • YouTube is known to have some of the worst commenters.

  • It takes a shitload of time to edit videos.

  • You can't hide in a video. Your face and your voice are there for everyone.

I’ve had many other ideas in the past that did NOT workout and it was really disappointing. So I'm trying to protect my heart.

But what I’ve learned lately is that releasing dreams into the world builds momentum and accountability. My mind is still blown by what has happened so far with my SoftMen Book project. So for now, I am just going to claim my desire. Feel it with everything I have and pay close attention to when the Universe opens a path.

I believe I can make a big impact on YouTube, and I have no clue how to go about this.

Can someone in my community help me? Do you guys have resources, experience, or support that will help me get closer to my dream?

PS: Here’s my first video podcast on Youtube. It’s super raw and unpolished, but I kind of love it.

Done is better than perfect. It don't get much more raw and real than this. On the first ever SoftMen Podcast we dive deep with Ben Dussault and discuss our upcoming SoftMen naked photo shoot.

Bob Gauvreau (Coach of The Week)

I used to hate money. I genuinely believed it was the root of ALL the problems in the world.

In the past, I had some trauma around money that left me hurt and wounded. And so later in life when I became a photographer and artist, it was easy to fall into the “starving artist” mindset.

Here’s how it works…

“I don’t care about money; I just want to create cool things. If I put all my focus into being creative, money will eventually find me and I won't ever have to worry about it.”

Not only did this strategy NOT work for me, but it harmed and limited me. By refusing to take an honest look into my finances and my beliefs around money, I eventually burnt myself out.

But money is just another metric for evaluating growth. It is not the most important metric. It is not the only metric. Things like integrity, community, authenticity and joy are also super important metrics that I track closely.

And so today, I refuse to work with clients that are not committed to profit. This is a radically different approach from my previous “starving artist” stance.

I’m tired of watching brilliant, passionate, loving humans ignore money and burn themselves out. This burnout can lead to them quitting their dreams and even growing to resent their gifts and superpowers.

But working through our personal limiting beliefs around money can be challenging to do on our own, and sometimes we need help. We need someone who has done it already — for themselves and hundreds of others.

Someone who lives and breathes it.

Someone who is wildly passionate about this work.

Someone who is crazy smart, yet also compassionate and non-judgemental.

My friend Bob Gauvreau is exactly this person.

He has a best-selling book on gaining financial clarity. In fact, he’s so damn good that Tony Robbins brought him on as his sole Canadian Partner for his Global Accounting Advisors Team.

And besides being brilliant when it comes to finances and business strategy, he’s also honestly one of the nicest dudes I know. Seriously!

So without further ado, here’s a bit more about Bob Gauvreau, coach of the week...

Did I Actually Say That To Liz Gilbert?

I was given only 5 minutes with Elizabeth Gilbert. There were 2 people assigned to stand in the back of the room with watches, timing our session, just to make sure she was able to stay on schedule.

She had lots to do that day. She was one of the keynote speakers at Archangel Summit and I was grateful for every second she was able to squeeze in for the shoot.

My original plan was to be cool as a cucumber and pretend like it was no big deal. It took less than 2 seconds for that plan to go out the window. When I went to greet Liz, the first thing that came out of my mouth was, “I love you Liz Gilbert.”

That was not in the plan. The second sentence shot out of my mouth, “You have radically changed my life.” Since playing it cool was no longer an option, I decided to ride the wave and let my heart lead.

I’ll never forget how present and kind she was. When Liz made eye contact or spoke it felt like she really cared. Maybe I’m making this part up — seeing what I want to see. But also, who freaking cares? I’ll never know what she was actually thinking. I’ll never understand what her experience was like.

But what I do know is how deeply that experience impacted me. Those 5 minutes with Liz Gilbert lifted me so high. Gave me so much hope. And for that, I will forever be grateful.

We Are All Going Bald (Including You)

Now get over it and go change the world.

It took me a long time to accept that I look different from how I used to. Specifically, it took me a long time to accept that I was balding

For so long, my identity was connected to a younger version of myself with a full head of hair. And secretly I didn’t want people watching my videos and saying, “What happened to Darius? He got old!

But they were right.
I did get older.
So did they.
So did everyone else.

That’s how the human experience works. We get older and WE CHANGE.

After shooting over 300,000 photos of people’s faces, I have seen this unavoidable fact (that we are all getting older and changing) hold so many people back from fully showing up in their lives.

They’re waiting for their 21 year old body to return.
They’re waiting to time-travel back into their teenage years.
They’re waiting for their wrinkles to disappear and the hair on their heads to grow back.

And while no one expects any of these things to actually happen, somehow we still wait.

Our younger selves deserve love and respect, but our current selves are FUCKING POWERFUL exactly as they are. Because our current selves are the only ones that have a voice.

They are the only ones who can create change NOW.

I have wrinkles.
I have less hair on my head.
I have more weight around my belly.

I LOOK different. Because I AM different.

And now it’s time to MAKE A FUCKING DIFFERENCE.

Who’s with me?

Last Weekend I Went On A Double Date with My Friend and His Penis

Men, I have a very personal question to ask you. What does your relationship with your penis look like?

  • First of all, do you even have a relationship?

  • Do you guys talk?

  • Do you work well together?

  • Or are you just two passing ships?

I used to think I had a good relationship with my penis. But then I spent some time with Steve Ballantyne and all of that came crashing down.

Steve and my friend Adil Dhalla were the first two people to introduce me to the concept of Penis Wellness. Penis Wellness is a workshop for men to encourage open dialogue about practices and rituals that could enhance our relationships with our penises. By the end of the workshop, all the men would get naked in a sauna together and would look at each others’ full naked bodies—including each man’s penis—and then they would look into each others eyes and say, “I see you.”

I’m not going to lie, when I first heard about this I laughed—thinking it was a joke. But I have come to understand that my initial mocking reaction came from an inner embarrassment and shame. I grew up believing it was important to hide my penis. The only purpose of my penis was to go to the washroom, self pleasure, and as a tool during sex. Otherwise my penis stayed ignored.

Here’s the funny thing: despite all this, if you would have asked me the question at the beginning of this post, my answer would have been, “I love him. He’s great.”

But did my actions demonstrate love?

If my penis was personified as a romantic partner, I’ve been the worst partner ever.

  • We never talk, unless I need something.

  • I shared no gestures or acts of love or intimacy.

  • I kept him hidden mostly because I was embarrassed to bring him out.

  • I never talked about him with my friends.

  • I even called him my “junk”.

Fast-forward to Saturday’s naked SoftMen photoshoot with Steve.

I am in the presence of someone with a deep, intimate, and meaningful relationship with his penis.

It was just like going on a double date with another couple.

  • You see how loving and connected they are.

  • How much they care and respect each other.

  • How much deep intimacy they share for one another.

  • How much they laugh together and how all that makes them feel super confident and solid.

Then you go home with your partner and get into a big fight.

Full disclosure: that’s EXACTLY what happened to me after my shoot with Steve. I had such a blast during the shoot, but later that night and the next day I started to implode.

It was challenging to be in the presence of a naked man with a deep grounded confidence. His power and boldness made me want to shrink away. I wanted to hide so badly. But the powerful gift I discovered underneath it all was an invitation to explore my own relationship with my body and my penis.

And what I found is that there is definitely room for more love, kindness and a deeper connection.

Steve, thank you for really showing up, and for templating what’s possible for me and men everywhere. I love you brother.

Men of Colour, Where Are You?!
Colorful Paint Strokes Brazilian Carnival Instagram Post (1).png

Where are all my Middle Eastern men?

Where are all my Asian men?

Where are all my African men?

Where are all my Latin men?

Where are all my Indigenous men?

Where are all my Caribbean men?

Where are all my South Asian men?

Powerful, ETHNIC men.

Brave and beautiful MEN OF COLOUR.

Where are you?!

Every day I get more men volunteering to be a part of my SoftMen book. I am so grateful for every brave man who throws his hat in the ring. Your courage, your commitment to growth—both personal and societal—is something I cherish and deeply respect.

But I am noticing a trend.

95% of the men volunteering to get naked in front of my camera are white men.

I love my white brothers. Their stories and their hearts are an important part of this journey, but this book and this movement needs to be about more than just white men

The men I choose to include or not include in this book will make a statement.

The amazing SoftMen that exist in my life are so diverse, so eclectic and expansive. I want that to be represented in this book. This extends far beyond race. Sexual orientation, age, and body types are important to consider. There are others as well.

If you believe it’s important to celebrate the softness in ALL men, please tag or share this post with any men of colour that you believe would be a good fit.

And also, to my white brothers, keep reaching out. I want you here too. I want to continue sharing your stories and your hearts with the world. I just want to make sure there is space for all of us.

PS: I know there are other social identifiers of men that I am missing. Besides race, body type, age and sexual orientation, what other men would be important to include in a book about SoftMen?
